How to Find the Right Child Care Setting or Preschool for Your Child

30 November, 2011

Parents often find that one of the toughest decisions they ever have to make revolves around the issue of child care. Parents want the perfect setting where their children can grow and learn safely. To find the right child care setting or preschool for your child, consider the following tips.

Plan Visits

Choose several child care settings and preschools to visit. Visit more than once to get a real feel for each one at different times of the day. Specifically, watch how the child care providers interact with the children, how schedules are followed, how behaviors are corrected, and how safety concerns are addressed. If anything strikes you as odd or goes against your parenting style, you know this isn’t where you want to leave your child.

Meet Providers

You will also need to schedule a time to meet with the provider one-on-one when you can ask questions without interruptions. This is your chance to find out how many children each provider is responsible for watching, how the providers will help your child acclimate to the new environment, and how the providers provide educational lessons to help your child grown and learn. This is the time to bring up any special needs your child may have to discuss how those needs will be met. This is especially important for children with disabilities, medical needs, behavioral challenges, or allergies.

Trust Your Gut

When you visit the child care center or preschool, you should get a good feeling. The overall feeling should be one of fun and happiness where children feel secure and want to play and learn. You should also get a feeling from the teachers that they enjoy the work they do. At the end of the day, if you don’t feel good about the place, neither will your children.
