Michael Gove had harsh words for Eton College in Berkshire
Speaking at Wellington College’s Festival of Education, Mr Gove praised the conference hosts for successfully sponsoring a state school, Wellington Academy.
He went on to question why other independent schools remained too worried about their reputations to perform similar functions.
In a reference to Eton, he said: “The question for some public schools, some of them in Berkshire, is: if you’re so good why is Anthony Seldon (the master of Wellington) proving he’s better at transforming state education than you are?”
To apluse from delegates Mr Gove added: “As they say in Spiderman, ‘to those who are given great powers are expected great responsibity’.”
Eton College, in Berkshire, educated many of Mr Gove’s colleagues including David Cameron, the Prime Minister.
