Mack Brown: ‘No question we’ll be a work in progress for awhile’

4 March, 2011

A few quick hits from today’s availability with Mack Brown during spring practice:

1. It’s been a week into spring, and still no jobs are “solidified” according to coach Mack Brown. As far as the quarterback situation, all four – Garrett Gilbert, Case McCoy, Connor Wood and David Ash – are working with the first team and there is no depth chart.

After watching practice for a little bit, it looked like Gilbert was the strongest of the four based on passing and running drills. As far as having chemistry with receivers, there’s not much separation yet.

2. Because of the new systems on offense and defense, Brown doesn’t anticipate he’ll see much separation in any position for the next few weeks. Today was the team’s first day in pads, though, and Brown said it will be interesting to see who steps up in the next few days.

“It will take longer to see separation this year because of all the new,” Brown said. “Probably not until after spring break. We’ll have a big scrimmage the Thursday before spring break and that will probably be more of a separating time than any other time thus far.”

3. There’s some lack of depth on the offensive line in terms of numbers this spring as Dominic Espinosa, Kyle Kriegel land Luke Poehlmann can only participate in walk-throughs as they recover from injuries sustained last season. Brown mentioned Paden Kelley, Trey Hopkins and Tray Allen as players who have been showing some good things in the past week.

4. Brown said there’s been a lot of enthusiasm during practices and that all of the guys have really embraced the new coaches and the two new systems.

“We have smart players and they’ve picked up the two systems well,” Brown said. “They’ve been working pretty fast considering all of the ‘new’ that’s out there. I’ve heard the word fun a lot. They are challenged, they all have a chance, there’s great chemistry and great team morale right now and the coaches are really getting along. It’s fun to see them working through this process.”

5. Because of the two new systems, the team is behind were they’d usually be ahead on the first day of pads.

“I think we’ll be behind all spring,” Brown said. “You have an offense in place for 13 years, the guys knew what to do even if you tweaked it. You have a defense in place for the last three years without a change. No question we’ll be a work in progress for awhile.”
