UT’s Gray says he’s not leaving for Tennessee Titans
Jerry Gray apparently plans to stay on Mack Brown’s staff at Texas – despite overtures from the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
Speaking at a Longhorn Club meeting Thursday in Austin, Gray told the gathering he wasn’t going to Tennessee. Sources close to the program indicated that Gray’s private position throughout the week mirrors the one expressed today.
As a matter of policy, the Texas athletic department doesn’t publicly comment or issue statements regarding staff members and job rumors. Gray, a former Texas All-American, was hired away from the Seattle Seahawks in January as an assistant head coach and defensive backs coach. He replaced Duane Akina, who had left for a similar position at Arizona.
The Titans had notified Texas this week that they had intended to interview Gray for the vacant defensive coordinator position. Gray has not given any indication he plans to travel to Nashville for an interview.
Could things change? Possibly, given that Tennessee coach Mike Munchak seems willing to offer $1 million year. But it would be a surprise given Gray’s public and private posture.
