Crestwood Middle stacks portable classrooms to expand
Crestwood Middle School in Royal Palm Beach is using an innovative plan to build a two-story expansion to its school while saving money: the additional building, made up of about 40 classrooms, is being built using old portable concrete classrooms.
As part of Crestwood’s $14 million expansion project, Royal Concrete Concepts is recycling its modular portable classrooms that were used at several other schools in the district and using them to build the additional wing, according to the company. The portable classrooms have flat roofs, so they can be easily stacked, reconfigured and expanded.
Students are expected to be able to occupy the additional modular-style building at the beginning of the school year in August.
However, some interior work will continue on through part of the next school year.
The addition, which will aesthetically match the other buildings on Crestwood’s campus, will accommodate an added 1,773 students, according to the district’s website.
According to a press release from Royal Concrete Concepts, recycling the portable classrooms to build the addition instead of using all new materials saved the district 26 percent of the cost for the new addition.
