Parents: It’s Just a Game.

7 February, 2011

The following are Hockey Canada Public Service Announcements.

They should be required viewing by parents.

And it wouldn’t hurt coaches to watch.

Because nothing brings out the “Idiot Gene” like athletics (or any extracurricular).

It’s amazing how silly these comments seem coming out of kid’s mouths.

Enjoy.

Two Steps to Showing Commitment in Your Executive MBA Application

5 February, 2011

An essential element of your executive MBA application (and most other school-specific applications) is demonstrating commitment to the program. For EMBA programs, commitment requires the ability to meet the demands of the EMBA along with your other responsibilities.

Completing these two steps in your application enables you to demonstrate that commitment

  1. Show knowledge of the program.
  2. Reveal what you will do or change to ensure that you can excel in a part-time program while working full time.

Sounds easy? Or not so easy? Using the Chicago Booth Executive MBA application #1 as an example, I provide details in the video below.

Would you like more tips for your Executive MBA application? Please join us on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET/ 6:00 PM GMT for 4 Essentials in an Executive MBA Application, a free webinar given by Cindy Tokumitsu and Jenn Weld. Reserve your spot now!

Observations from Baylor’s overtime win over Texas A&M

5 February, 2011

A timely layup from Anthony Jones helped Baylor upset No. 16 Texas A&M Saturday at Reed Arena. Here are a few observations.

–LaceDarius Dunn was 1 of 9 in the second half. And his team still won. When Dunn dropped off, Perry Jones III picked up and delivered. His team high 27 points and 9 of 9 free throw shooting show what can happen when he gets enough touches and looks to score. “He put us on his back, and he carried us,” Dunn said of Jones III.

–The 17 turnovers is still a huge problem for the Bears. They escaped Saturday with a win, but a performance like they had in the last five minutes of the first half (six turnovers, including two failed inbounds) will make winning on the road much tougher.

–Anthony Jones just seems to be in the right place at the right time. Last year at Texas, it was Jones who caught Ekpe Udoh’s desperation airball and put it back with 0.3 seconds left to force overtime. “We used to joke when he first got here that he was big shot Anthony Jones, big shot Ant,” coach Scott Drew said. “Some guys just have a knack for hitting game winners.”

–Baylor out-rebounded A&M, 35-30. The Aggies did snatch 14 offensive boards, but the Bears rebounding effort was still stronger than it was in their last three games (29-33 favoring Oklahoma, 38-38 against Colorado, and 26-35 favoring Kansas State). “We had to hold our own,” Drew said. “We were relying on second-chance points and knew we had to get rebounds.”

–Drew seems set in his starting lineup, bringing Quincy Acy off the bench as a “spark.” J’mison Morgan once again was not much of a factor, playing 10 minutes and scoring two points with four fouls. Stargell Love also played only seven minutes, his fewest in four games (Jan. 22, Oklahoma State, seven minutes).

We All Get Way Too Much Information.

5 February, 2011

Snow is bad. Ice is worse (I just cancelled school… again).

That’s the bad news.

The good news is we’ve known this pre-apocalyptic storm has been coming for about a week (if you are reading this someplace warm… please know the rest of us hate you).

That’s more bad news.

One would think receiving updated updates on the weather every 4 seconds would be a good thing. It’s not.

Society is on overload.

We have so much information at our fingertips it’s consuming our every thought.

Ten years ago, the only weather information came from the local news station.

You watched it at 6 pm, then you had to wait until 10 o’clock to get the next update.

There was time to let things soak in.

Now, the interweb has allowed us to update ourselves.

And we do. Every few seconds (hello, Twitter).

But this also allows us to blow regular everyday happenings completely out of proportion.

As we share information, too often over exaggeration and hyperbole take the place of common sense.

One person says they’ve heard there is 3 inches of snow on the way, and the next says it’s 4-6.

Before you know it everyone has heard 27 inches and there is only one conclusion to make.

We are all going to DIE!

After a bazillion years (approximately), life as we know it will cease to exist.

You would think the more information we receive would allow us to make more informed decisions.

I think the opposite is happening.

FOX News isn’t making us smarter politically.

MSNBC isn’t helping us elect better representatives.

The local news isn’t calming our fears about crimes and accidents.

Websites are available 24 hours a day. Some even tell us the truth.

It’s so much that it’s becoming just noise.

It’s almost like the more we know, the dumber we get.

Lots and lots of information. But so much noise.

I need to know it’s going to snow.

But I also need to know society is going to survive once it stops.

La Salle defeats Charlotte 91-86 in 2 OT

31 January, 2011

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – If there’s one thing that makes La Salle coach John Giannini happy, it’s watching the Explorers’ role players step up at crunch time.

And step up they did Saturday night, as La Salle rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to force overtime, then pull out a 91-86 double-overtime victory over Charlotte.

Cole Stefan hit two of his three 3-pointers at key points in the two overtimes and Tyreek Duren scored six of his 12 points in the final overtime to give the Explorers (11-11, 3-4 Atlantic 10 Conference) their third straight win.

“That was as dramatic a game as I’ve been involved with in an awful lot of years,” Giannini said. “It was a thrilling game to win and a brutal game to lose, because both teams played their hearts out. We couldn’t be more happy with the result … or the number of kids that contributed.”

Jerrell Williams and Earl Pettis had 17 points each and Aaric Murray added 16 points for La Salle, which is 2-2 in overtime games this season.

K.J. Sherrill had a career-high 24 points and 13 rebounds for the 49ers (9-12, 1-6), who lost their third straight game and dropped to 1-3 in overtime, all going 2 OT or more.

Yet thinking about overtime didn’t appear to be in the cards for the Explorers, who trailed 35-28 at the half and were down 67-61 with 1:08 remaining in regulation.

Then the role players stepped up.

Ruben Guillandeaux scored eight of his 12 points in the final 68 seconds, including a runner in the lane with 21 seconds left that tied the score at 71-71 and forced the extra period.

The 49ers had a chance to win it in the first OT, scoring seven unanswered points to pull ahead 78-75 with 11.4 seconds left. But Stefan nailed a 3-pointer with 7.8 seconds remaining to tie the game.

“I had a rough time shooting before that,” said Stefan, who was 1 for 4 on 3-point attempts in regulation and had missed two previous 3-point attempts in OT. “I missed quite a few shots. But coach had the confidence in me to keep me in the game, and Tyreek made a great play in getting me the ball. I didn’t think about it – I just shot it, and luckily it went in.”

Another Stefan 3-pointer with 4:34 left in the second overtime put the Explorers ahead for good, and Duren hit a layup after Sherrill missed a pair of free throws that would have put the 49ers back on top.

Duren then hit four free throws in the final 20 seconds to preserve the win.

“They made plays down the stretch when they needed to,” Charlotte coach Alan Major said. “Especially that shooter (Stefan) – they only made four 3-pointers, but he had three of them.”

Free throws were Charlotte’s problem.

After going 10 for 10 from the line in the first half, the 49ers hit just 12 of 18 in the second half and only 9 of 18 in the two overtimes. Meanwhile, La Salle was 24 of 28 from the line in the second half and both overtimes, and was 29 of 34 for the game.

“Even with that, if we had defended a little better, we could’ve made up for that,” Major said. “But it got a little contagious – when a couple of guys missed them, it got in our heads.”

Javarris Barnett scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half for Charlotte, including three 3-pointers at key moments that helped stake the 49ers to their eight-point halftime lead.

La Salle tied the score at 12-12 on Steve Weingarten’s layup with 13:43 left, but Barnett followed with a 3 from the corner 11 seconds later to put Charlotte ahead.

Barnett then dropped in two more 3-pointers, the last with 1:37 remaining, to cap a 14-8 run and give the 49ers a 35-25 lead, their biggest of the half.

It was a different story in the second half, though, as the Explorers rallied to tie the score twice, the last at 54 on Pettis’ jumper with 7:53 left. But Charlotte went on a 13-7 run that put the 49ers up 67-61 with 2:20 remaining.

Jamar Briscoe added 14 points and An’Juan Wilderness and Derrio Green had 11 points each for the 49ers.
